The Academy of Applied Science, on behalf of the U.S. Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP), is looking for new partners to mentor  high school students interested in STEM.  The Research & Engineering Apprenticeship Program (REAP) works with universities across the country to provide high school students, underserved in STEM, a summer research experience. This past summer, over 900 students applied for REAP.  Currently, 60 universities participate in the program and we are seeking new partners to expand our reach to students so we can offer much needed additional STEM opportunities to them.

Students learn about and contribute to research activities in a lab under the guidance of a mentor. The impact is immeasurable.  Mentors have a positive impact on the lives of these high schools students that goes beyond the summer STEM experience.

Will you please take a moment to consider the attached RFPProposals are due September 14, 2018.

Here are some of the comments we have received from students over the past few years:

“The best aspect of my time as an apprentice was the mentorship. This has enabled me to build a professional network and I was introduced to faculty and disciplines across the facility. This experience has given me a better idea of what research is actually like.”

“I got to see how the scientific process works: do the research, the process of writing a paper to explain it logically, and actually presenting it in a way that can be understood.  I was allowed to present at a conference and it was amazing!”

“In nearly every aspect of research, I worked with my mentor or a team of researchers. The experience helped me to master my subject of study, to present a paper, to learn the process of publishing my findings and just overall creativity.  It calls for really out-of-the-box thinking. It was a real world research environment.”

“I have enjoyed the one on one mentoring.  My mentor and I were a team working side by side. I learned new modeling and experimenting skills. My mentor helped me work through the challenges of research and showed me how to collaborate across other fields of study.”

Please let me know if you have any questions.  I look forward to hearing from you.  Thank you for your consideration.
