Tell Us about Yourself

I’m an incoming freshman at the University of Pennsylvania where I plan to major in Computer Science.

What AEOP program(s) did you participate in?

Research & Engineering Apprenticeship Program (REAP)

Words of Advice?

I would say just do it. You get to work on some cool projects with some cool professors and you might get a cool check. It really teaches you how to conduct, and it might persuade you to be a researcher.

Best Things about the Program?

There are several cool things about this program. For one, I learned a lot. In a microbiology lab, I learned how to do gram stains, enzyme tests, and PCR, all while relating it to a real-world need. The program also shows you what the life of a researcher is like, and it is a life that I enjoyed. Everyday there was something different going on. At the beginning, you make a hypothesis. Then you complete multiple test to prove, or disprove, your hypothesis. Overall, it is a fun experience and it didn’t feel like work.

How Participating in AEOP Inspired You to Advance in the STEM Field?

It really showed me how much fun you can have in the STEM field. There are always interesting subjects to learn from and new discoveries to be made. It inspired me to pursue machine learning research in the future. The research opportunity given to me by AEOP really showed me how much I did not know. Research is needed because there are so many unanswered questions and I want to help answer those questions. I also have to give a shout-out to Dr. Aikins and Dr. Scott for helping me learn how to be a researcher.

What are Your Future Hopes and Dreams?

I hope to be a machine learning researcher somewhere and use my skills to help the world in whatever way I can.
