Working at the DHS Center of Excellence ALERT

What AEOP program(s) did you participate in?

JSHS

Words of Advice?

Every student should enroll in an AEOP program, as it will allow them to explore the field of STEM while gaining tons of new technical skills.

Best Things about the Program?

The best part of JSHS is allowing students to work on a project that they are passionate about and disseminate it in front of peers. JSHS allows students to take a concept/problem in their own field of interest and try to work on a solution or discover more about this field. Allowing students to perform this sort of work in high school is very beneficial, as it allows for the development of skills in that area. Additionally, a great part about the JSHS program was being able to receive feedback on the work performed. After presenting my project at JSHS, I was able to see areas where things can be improved in my project and further them to better the work I had performed

How Participating in AEOP Inspired You to Advance in the STEM Field?

JSHS allowed me to learn new skills such as the Fourier transform, sampling theory and various other digital signal processing skills. Seeing the results of these skills on my project, fueled my knowledge to learn more in this area to further improve the field.

As a Result of the program

As a result of JSHS, I have been able to obtain a thirst for research and learning. Throughout working on my JSHS project, I had hit many technical barriers. Each of the problems that I came to required lots of research and learning more to overcome the barrier. This process of learning new things to improve a field was what I knew I wanted to continue after JSHS. Therefore, I began work my first day of freshman year in a research laboratory.
