About Internship After School Program Applicants Training Calendar Schedule
 

Recruiting 16 first- or second-year college students to act as teachers in this after school program

We are looking for first-, second- or third-year college students, enrolled in programs with major in biology, chemistry, engineering or information technology. We are looking for people who like to interact with students and would be willing to act as teachers in this fun, technology-based science education program. To enroll as a near-peer mentor, you must:

Love biology or chemistry; be willing to inspire someone to pursue a career in science

Be interested in learning a complex suit of programs to compose and produce songs

Be willing to create a dynamic and innovative working atmosphere with youngsters of the D.C. public school district, based on effective communication and leadership skills

You must love interacting with young kids

Be able to attend at least 95% of the training sessions, which will be held at the Walter Reed Army Institute of research facility in Silver Spring, Maryland

The training consists of:

1 introductory two-hour session

2 two-hour sessions in the use of multimedia tools to teach biology and chemistry (Fascinating Education)

1 two-hour and 1 five-hour sessions on experimental biology or chemistry

5 five-hour sessions on the use of software Sequel and sound technology

2 two hour sessions on communication and leadership

Students must be able to teach all 12 sessions of the after school program, held twice a week, from 3:30-5:30PM at Bell High School. The school is located at:

Many of the two-hour training sessions may be scheduled as conference calls, depending on the time availability of selected applicants. All five-hour sessions will be held on Saturdays at WRAIR. This training is mandatory. By attending this training, participants commit to teach all 12 sessions of the after school program. Afters school program will start in March and will last for 6 weeks. Sessions will be twice a week for 2 hours, starting at around 3:30 PM on days that are yet to be defined.

What we offer:

Enrollment in this program will provide you with an exciting opportunity to be part of a Department of Defense educational program which will enrich your career training in many levels

We offer stipends, varying from $800 to $1100, depending on academic experience and role

Awards and payment schedule will be discussed individually

You will receive credits for the participation in this educational effort.

You will receive training in:

Cutting edge science methods and approaches

Advanced and innovative teaching methods

Extensive technology-based tools for musical production

Communication and leadership training.

Selection:

You will be notified by email by January 30th if you have been selected

Selected candidates will be invited for a personal interview

Preference will be given to former students of the public school in the District of Columbia

Acceptance to this program will be notified by email by February 1th

Preparatory training is planned to start by February 5th.
