Army Research Laboratory in White Sands Missile Range, NM

Application availability/deadline: Registration will close on May 1, 2009.

Students having just completed Grades 9-12 will be considered for participation. All applicants must complete the essay included in the online application.

The GEMS program offers students the opportunity to explore new interests in Science & Math and expand upon their current interests with unique hands-on laboratory experiences at the US Army Research Laboratory (ARL) facilities on Main Post, White Sands Missile Range. ARL is partnering with high schools in the Las Cruces and El Paso areas to identify motivated and enthusiastic 9th - 12th grade students to attend GEMS for a one-week period this summer. A total of 64 students will be selected to participate.

Summer Session Description: In the 2009 GEMS Program, students will attend a series of twelve learning modules taught by ARL scientists and engineers during the course of the week. Each module will last about 1 ½ hours and will involve a variety of hands-on activities and topics; such as robotics, electronics, weather analysis and forecasting, computer programming tasks, etc. Teachers from each of the high schools will serve as facilitators and will accompany the students throughout the week.
